Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
