Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
