Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
